Political Engagement of Chinese International Students in Anglophone Academia
We aim to investigate whether there has been a shift in political consciousness around alignments with the establishment politics of their host countries, solidarity with other social movements and political causes, and structures of advocacy amongst Chinese international students in US and UK educational institutions. Extending from this, we ask how Chinese international students negotiate their discourse on Chinese politics with the US establishment discourse and left-wing critical discourse when operating in the Western university space. Southeast Asian Border Formations, Global Displacement and State Violence
I have been interested in border politics for a long time – now seems to be an especially pertinent time for a project that looks at technologies of power used by States to construct and enforce borders, and how these border formations cultivate new forms of migrant subjectivities, specifically within the context of exiles of the Spring Revolution in Burma/Myanmar, border merchants in Ruili, China, and refugee communities in Thailand.
Here’s some of the work that I’ve already done:
English Translation of Between Borders: The Spring Revolution and Burmese Exiles on the Thai-Myanmar Border and Translator’s Notes (in Chinese)
“The Southern Great Wall on the China-Myanmar Border“, published by the U.S.-China Perception Monitor, Jul 19, 2025 (reprinted on Left Renewal)
“China Should Leave the Junta in Myanmar Behind”, published by the U.S.-China Perception Monitor, Aug 27, 2024
I’m actively looking for opportunities to volunteer or conduct research on relevant issues. If you’re interested in collaborating, please reach out to me via the contact methods listed on the Home Page!
